Protect your breastbone!

During your heart surgery, your doctor had to cut your sternum (breastbone). When the surgery was finished, a strong wire was used to hold the sternum together.

Being active after heart surgery helps your recovery, but it's important to be safe. Sternal precautions help to prevent the separation of your breastbone as it heals.

You can view our sternal precautions brochure here. For more information, contact your nearest cardiac rehabilitation program.

Remember, follow any instructions your health care team give you after surgery and speak with your cardiac rehabilitation team or doctor if you have any questions or concerns.
